Research Infrastructure for Off Campus Facilities

Provide oversight of Network, IT projects, and technical support that occur at SDSU Alvarado Research Park. This project involves working on improving SDSU Research environment, which is in alignment with one of the SDSU Strategic priorities, "Becoming a Premier Public Research University: A New Kind of HSI."

Description

One of the Provide oversight of Network, IT projects, and technical support that occur at SDSU Alvarado Research Park.

Goals / Deliverables

  • Understand Network and technical issues at SDSU Alvarado Research Park.
    • Create a Survey that includes qualitative and quantitative questions related to understanding the technical issues that are occurring.
    • Schedule meetings with the various researchers at SDSU Alvarado to get their responses to the survey.
    • Compile the results of the survey.
    • Analyze Network Traffic (internal and external).
    • Review network equipment at Alvarado (age, warranty, upgrade path).
    • Work with the CIO and Director of Infrastructure support to review the survey and network data, and create an action plan.
  • Share findings and action plan with Executive Leadership.
    • CIO presents findings and action plans to Vice Presidents.
    • CIO and AVP of Cyberinfrastructure present finding and action plan to the Executive team of the Research Foundation and agree on how to fund the necessary upgrades.

Phase I

  • Upgrade the Network equipment as per the survey findings.
    • Install Fiber cable in buildings 6363, 6475, 6495, and 6505 to allow for the support of higher speeds. Building will cut-over to new fiber in mid-March.
    • The upgrade of the wired and wireless network equipment in building 6475 will be a model building to test the solution. If upgrade addresses concerns then all Alvarado buildings in need of equipment replacement will be upgraded in Fall of 2020, or Spring 2021.  The project was delayed due to the pandemic (Covid-19).
      • Wired and wireless network in 6475 Alvarado will be completed by the end of July 2020.
      • Next, observe the performance for 90 days and study results. If there are no issues, the remaining buildings network equipment upgrade will be installed. This phase completion date was revised to early summer 2021, due to restricted access to the building during the pandemic (Covid-19).
  • As per the survey findings, set up quarterly town hall meetings to discuss Network and technical changes on main campus that might have an impact on them, as well as changes or upgrades at Alvarado. Some meetings might occur prior to major changes being done at a given location. The meetings will be used as a platform to listen to any issues or concerns. In addition, include SDSU Alvarado tenants in any communication being sent out about technical changes that will affect their location.
    • First meeting was March 4, 2020, and subsequent meetings have occurred.
  • As per the survey findings, track, monitor and make sure that reported issues from Alvarado clients are resolved in a timely manner.
    • This will be done using the IT Service Management application called ServiceNow.
    • Servicenow report on Research Activities was created in July of 2020 and is sent to the AVP of Cyber Infrastructure (CI) for reveiw on a weekly basis. AVP of CI will follow-up with IT support, such as when tickets have been opened to long.

Phase II

  • Upgrade the switches to Alcatel Lucent 6860, and the Access Points to Aruba WiFi 6 802.11ax for the following locations, which will be done in 2021 -2022.
    • Sky Park:
