What is Azure Secure Research Enclave?
The Information Technology Division (ITD) operates the Azure Secure Research Enclave (SRE), a secure cloud environment designed to support research projects that require compliance with NIST SP 800-171 standards. These standards are commonly mandated by federal and state funding agencies. The Secure Research Enclave provides researchers with a secure, managed computing environment that includes Azure Virtual Desktops, protected storage, and other supporting services. The enclave can be provisioned for individual investigators, research teams, or entire laboratory groups requiring secure access to research data and computing resources. The Secure Research Enclave (SRE) has been reviewed and approved for the following data types and compliance requirements: National Institutes of Health (NIH) controlled-access data governed by the NIH Genomic Data Sharing (GDS) Policy, Research projects requiring compliance with NIST SP 800-171, and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) associated with approved sponsored research projects. Note: This does not include DoD CMMC CUI.

How Do I Get It?
The IT Division operates and manages the Secure Research Enclave (SRE), including platform administration, security monitoring, logging, configuration management, and related professional services, at no cost to researchers.
Cloud resources consumed within the SRE—including Azure Virtual Desktops, storage, and other Azure services—are charged on a pass-through, cost-recovery basis. These costs are typically allowable project expenses and may be charged to eligible state, foundation, or sponsored research funds, subject to applicable funding and institutional guidelines.
The Azure Virtual Desktop services provide multi-session workstations that can share resources with members of your group or lab to reduce costs.
