What is NRP LLM Access?

The National Research Platforms (NRP) makes available popular open-weight large language models (LLMs) with a rotating catalog of popular models. Models can be accessed through a browser-based chat interface using Open WebUI or programmatically through an OpenAI-compatible API endpoint. The service supports a range of research and computational workflows, including research assistance, long-context analysis, agentic coding, multimodal reasoning, batch processing, and embeddings for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and other retrieval workflows.

How Do I Get It?

Access is available to NRP users who are members of an LLM-enabled group or namespace. To request access:

  1. First, log into the NRP portal using your SDSUid credentials through CILogon and accept the NRP Acceptable Use Policy.
  2. Next, submit a Research Cyberinfrastructure Consultation Request selecting NRP Large Language Model Access as the Request Type.
  3. The Research Cyberinfrastructure group will grant your NRP accocunt access to NPR LLM services.

Once access is ganted, you will be able to use NRP-managed LLM services:

  • Open WebUI for interacting with the models using an easy to use web interface.
  • LLM API Keys managment to create keys allowing programmatic access using tools compatible with the OpenAI API standard.
  • Milvus vector database credential managment for manging access to the managed Milvus vector database service.

The available model catalog changes over time and current models and status can be found on the NRP LLM Status page.
